Swimming in Pumpkins!

We had a fantastic day Saturday for the BBBS Open House and Pumpkin Carving Event! The weather held up just long enough for us to carve 20 pumpkins outside and clean up before the clouds rolled in. Thanks to Fiesta for donating the pumpkins.

The Orange Jackets, Kristen Rogers, Janet Arnold, Thierno, and Denise volunteered to decorate and set-up the tables. Thank you so much. The decorations were beautiful!

Matches and guests began to arrive just before 2pm. Each match selected a pumpkin or brought their own and were set loose with the tools. With 4-5 matches at each table there was hardly room for even an elbow! However, everyone had lots and lots of fun. As mentors and children finished their masterpieces they moved inside for drinks, Blue Bell Ice Cream, and coloring/drawing. Finally, the long awaited judging took place and my Little Sister Crystal and I received second place (I promise it wasn’t rigged)! Each match was awarded gift certificates courtesy of Austin’s Park N Pizza for free admission to the park. I might add that an honorable mention should go out to Little Sister Desiree for her pumpkin complete with ears and hair! (more to come on that...stay tuned...)

So, besides the pumpkin carving what other events does BBBS host for matches?

Annually, we host four major agency events especially for matches; something really cool and yet to be determined for March, an awards ceremony called An Afternoon of Magic, Hobie Day, and a Holiday Party. We also receive donations of tickets to sporting events, theater performances, and other community events, in addition to monthly BBBS Sister to Sister activities. Plus, we have a discount list of more than 30 local businesses so that matches have inexpensive options when spending time together.
